Two-way radios in Education can be a valuable tool for teachers and on-site staff. The health and safety and well-being of all staff and pupils are essential. Two-way radios only enhance this, along with improved time management and communication efficiency. Many robust and durable two-way radios can be used on an education site. Handheld radios and suitable earpieces allow you to stay in contact and remain hands-free for the job at hand.

Why Use Two-Way Radios in Education?

  • Provide quick communications cover over large and multiple buildings
  • Digital radios can integrate with additional systems such as alarms
  • Digital radios allow on-site GPS tracking,
  • Indoor tracking via beacons
  • Full call logging for incident management
  • Helps organise large numbers of pupils and staff efficiently
  • Improve time management
  • Improves on-site security
  • Improves on-site management of pupils and staff

These are some of the benefits that two-way radios can offer to your education site

Using Two-Way Radios in Education On-site

Increasingly the health and safety of pupils and staff are becoming more important. Using the latest digital two-way radios allows you to vastly improve compliance with health and safety standards and ensure pupils and staff are safe and well.

Depending on the size of your education facility you can choose analogue radios and digital radios. Unless cost is a significant factor, we would recommend assessing digital two-way radios for your needs. They can now be much more than a basic communication device, they can be an integral part of how your education site functions.

With digital two-way radios you can:

  • Integrate alarm systems to notify radio users or dispatch console, operators
  • Connect digital radio communications across multiple, geographically located sites
  • Build an efficient communication network for your site
  • Communicate quickly with operatives
  • Speak to everyone with a two-way radio on site at once, such as in an emergency
  • Use dedicated channels or frequencies to communicate with individuals or groups of users

Which Two-Way Radios in Education Should I Use for Site?

Before a decision is made, you will need to consider many aspects, such as:

  • How large is the area I need to cover
  • Do I need coverage across separately located geographical locations
  • How much do the two-way radios cost
  • How many users require a two-way radio
  • Who are going to be using the two-way radios
  • What features do each radio user require
  • What type of material are the buildings made from
  • What health and safety requirements are there for emergency procedures
  • Do you require private communication channels so no outside listeners can eavesdrop

Now that we have considered some of the queries related to two-way radio use we can start to consider the type of two-way radio to use on your Education site.

Licence-free or Licenced Two-Way Radios

Licence-Free Two Way Radios

Licence-free two-way radios offer a very cost-effective solution for education sites. Licence-free radios have a power output of 0 .5 watts and come pre-programmed on the 446MHZ frequency range.

Should You Use Licence-Free Two-Way Radios?

On a educational site where the communication is simply to relay messages quicker. Provided the licence-free radios can communicate over the site area, then licence-free radios could be a good option.

Naturally where health and safety can be at risk from other non-site radio interference then we would advise not to use licence-free radios.

Licenced Two-Way Radios

Licenced two-way radios for educational sites offer a more effective solution due to the power output. UHF can have a maximum power output of 4 watts and VHF a maximum power output of 5 watts. A greater power output equals improved site coverage.

Ofcom Business Radio Licence

Licenced two-way radios will require an Ofcom Business Radio Licence per channel. If you are unfamiliar with two-way radio licencing requirements we recommend you learn more about Ofcom Business Radio Licencing here.

There are many licencing options available to you to enhance your on-site communications but unless you have extensive experience we would recommend that you contact a two-way radio supplier to assist with your application to ensure you choose the best option.

Analogue Two-Way Radios

You can still purchase analogue two-way radios and they are usually cheaper than digital radios. They operate radio to radio or with a repeater base station to boost the signal around larger sites but they do not offer the comprehensive options and integration that digital two-way radios can provide.

Digital Two-way Radios

Digital two-way radios are the ideal for education sites. Digital two-way radios offer a better battery life, better voice quality and increased use of frequencies. They can be integrated into systems such as TRBOnet which offer the ability to track the radios via GPS and location beacons, record voice conversations (useful for analysing incidents), send and receive messages and more. Furthermore, if you operate multiple locations, you can connect the sites over the internet to create one large two-way radio network.
